What to wear to your engagement session
Deciding what to wear to your engagement session can be quite the challenge. That’s why I’m here to help! When you hire me as your wedding photographer, you’ll get a complimentary engagement session with your wedding package. You’ll be able to bring up to three outfits so here’s a guide to help you decide what to wear.
Neutrals, neutrals neutrals
As much as you might love your favorite hot pink dress, you’re gonna want to leave it at home for your engagement session. The photos we take during your engagement session are meant to capture and showcase the love between you and your significant other. Bright, distracting colors can take the focus away from you and put it on your outfits. Soft, neutral outfits will keep the focus on you PLUS they’ll match the scenery where ever we go!
Colors to wear:
- White
- Tan
- Browns
- Pastels
Color to avoid:
- Neons
- Hot pink
- Bright red
Coordinate
Like mentioned above, we want to minimize distraction and keep the focus on you. Wearing matching outfits that are exactly the same might cause anyone looking at your photos to focus on the outfits rather than you.
Instead of matching, choose a color scheme and coordinate! The photos below are great examples of how to do that. You could both wear different shades of the same color, or coordinate your top to match their bottoms and vice versa!
Avoid large patterns and logos
Once again, we want to avoid distraction! Having words on your clothing will pull attention away from you and on to reading your shirt. Same for patterns; large chevron or polka dots will become the main focus of the photos. Below are some photos of patterned clothing that don’t take away from you.
Choosing the outfits
So now that you know which colors are best, how to coordinate, and what types of patterns to wear it’s time to pick your outfits! When you hire me as your engagement photographer, you’ll get to bring up to three outfits. I usually recommend bringing one casual and one “fancy” to get the most variety in your photos. Then if you choose a third this can be your “fun” outfit! Some couples choose to make their last outfit something special to them such as their favorite sports team jerseys.
Here are some ideas of what to wear for each outfit:
Casual Outfit
- Jeans
- Sweater
- Blouse
“Fancy” Outfit
- Long flowy dress (the besttt for photos, Lulus has some great options)
- Khakis
- Button up
“Fun” Outfit
- Your favorite team’s jerseys
- College apparel
- Something special to you
Now remember, these are all just recommendations! You totally don’t have to wear exactly what I recommend. If you want to wear three fancy outfits, go for it! Three casual outfits, do it! These are YOUR photos, wear what YOU want!

Alla and John’s couples session at Bell Rock is one I will dream of literally forever. It was one of those shoots that was just TOO good. To give you an idea, a typical couples session lasts for about an hour to an hour and a half. We ended up running around Bell Rock together for TWO AND A HALF HOURS until we ran out of light. Literally.
